EFRE funding of the Becker LNG Power Barge "Hummel"

During wintertime – from September to May – the LNG Power Barge “Hummel” is operated by Hamburg’s largest container terminal operator HHLA as a highly efficient combined heat and power plant (CHP). In this stationary operation mode, the LNG Power Barge is moored at Rugenberg Hafen which is located between Waltershofer Hafen and Köhlbrand. The floating LNG power plant is directly connected to the local natural gas grid for fuel supply and to the HHLA owned electricity grid as well as to the district heating of southern Hamburg for supply purposes.

With the target of significantly reducing CO2 emissions by increasing the efficiency within companies and their smart inclusion into the energy supply in Hamburg, the realisation of this worldwide unique project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (EFRE). In particular, support was provided for the construction of supply lines (electrical energy, natural gas and district heating) from the pontoon to the connection station on the HHLA site and for the jetty system (pontoon, dolphins and access bridge).
